The scope line is the most-read field and the most-skipped. A certificate that says "manufacture of precision machined components" covers a CNC shop's core work; one that says "trading of hardware products" covers a trader. Step 1: Verify the Body, Not Just the Paper
Certification bodies must themselves be accredited — audited by national accreditation bodies such as CNAS (China), ANAB (US), UKAS (UK), or DAkkS (Germany), among others. An accredited body's certificates carry its accreditation mark and a certificate number that can be checked in the body's public client directory. A factory with a genuine ISO 9001 system is more likely to have calibration records, controlled drawings, and batch documentation — which are the preconditions for consistent precision work. The certificate is the entrance ticket; the system is what you are actually buying. Do not let it substitute for the evidence that predicts delivery: drawing questions at quoting, first-article reports with real measurements, batch inspection data, and honest schedule communication. Weight it at perhaps 15–20% of your supplier scorecard and spend the rest of your attention on process and product evidence.
Two further distinctions worth knowing: ISO 9001 is a quality management certificate, not a product certificate — it does not certify that parts meet any specific standard.
